What the evidence shows
On an average night in June quarter 2024, 918 young people were in youth detention. 63% were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander despite comprising only 6% of the youth population. The majority were unsentenced (on remand). NT has the highest rate of youth detention in Australia.
